Jackson Hole’s Hotel Terra & Snake River Lodge & Spa

Lodging at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has pretty much gone upscale, as recent visits to the Hotel Terra and the Snake River Lodge & Spa illustrated.

Hotel Terra

Hotel Terra represents the latest trends in ski resort development thinking: it’s at once luxury-oriented, but built completely to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

An environmentally-sensitive hotel at a ski area. Cool.

But, what makes Hotel Terra LEED-worthy? According to Terra Resort Group PR-maven Samantha Denny
  • all materials used in the building’s construction are sustainable and non-toxic
  • more than 90 percent of the space has natural light
  • everything is zone heated.
The list goes on—right down to the mattresses.

The eco-orientation extends to using local suppliers, minimizing water and electricity use, and even to using recycled materials in the furnishings and decor. The strap-back style chairs in the Terra Café are made of recycled automobile seat belts.

Buckle up for breakfast? (They make a mean breakfast burrito, by the way.)

"We’re serious about this," Rick Walls, Terra VP of Finance, told me. "Some hotels ‘green-wash’ but we even employ a Vice President of Certifiability. We call her our Queen of Green. We don’t do anything without getting her approval first."

Green-wash. Is that a great term or what?

How many times have you been in a hotel where a little sign in the bathroom tells you to hang up your towel so it can be re-used to save the Earth only to have housekeeping take it away to launder after just one use? That’s green-washing.

Terra is also high-tech. Hi-def, Internet-connected TVs in every room; hi-speed wireless Internet; touch-screen phones.

And, the artwork is by local artists.

All good. But is it comfortable? Yes. I lodged in a junior suite. It was plush, but not overly so, and very airy. Understated upscale modern is an apt description. Sometimes too modern: the counter lighting in the full kitchen was so dim and oblique, I couldn’t see what I was doing when trying to program the automatic coffee maker.

The hotel holds rooms, tow kinds of suites, and one- and two-bedroom condos.

Like most of Jackson’s new lodgings, Terra has a spa. Called, Chill, the difference here is scale and intimacy. With just six treatment rooms, it’s impossible not to feel the service is just for you.

On-site, fine dining is found at Il Villaggio Osteria, where Roman Trattoria fare is served. This is a lively place, to be sure, that offers everything from wood-fired oven gourmet pizzas to fish, game, chicken and pasta—all made from sustainable and locally-sourced ingredients. The ambience works for a date or for bringing the kids.

Snake River Lodge & Spa

My memory is dim, but I think I stayed in this property in the 1970s when it was just a motel. It’s no plain motel now.

The property is described as "An exhilarating celebration of the American West," and as "western elegance," which refers, I take it, to the stone-and-wood-beam lobby decor, and its general mountain ranch-style feeling.

The place is wonderfully comfortable, and the service impeccable. Not that I’d’ve expected anything else. The amenities are all there:
  • complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi
  • fitness Center
  • indoor/outdoor heated pool, with cascading waterfalls
  • hot tub and sauna
  • sports equipment storage and valet.
It’s also a "ski-in" but not "ski-out" property, which is a bit confusing, but not off-putting.

As the name implies, the Lodge has a full-service spa, called Avanyu, of which everyone is most proud. I was luck enough to sample it. Once I found it. Seems you’re greeted on the ground foor, ride the elevator to the locker room, then again to the treatment rooms.

I struggled to keep my robe in place, but managed not to embarrass myself. The masseuse didn’t embarrass herself, either. She asked the right questions, and deftly all the problem spots just right.

The dining at gamefish restaurant is superb, albeit pricey. But, the excellent food available at the lobbyside bar is more a measure of the attention to quality and service here.

Snake River offers three room types and two suite sizes. It’s more than comfortable, and is an excellent choice for those who can afford luxury lodging.
